Internal manipulation of perceptual representations in human flexible cognition: A computational model

چکیده

Executive functions represent a set of processes in goal-directed cognition that depend on integrated cortical-basal ganglia brain systems and form the basis flexible human behaviour. Several computational models have been proposed for studying cognitive flexibility as key executive function Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST) represents an important neuropsychological tool to investigate it. These clarify aspects underlie flexibility, particularly decision-making, motor response, feedback-dependent learning processes. However, several studies suggest categorisation involved solution WCST include additional stage category representation supports other Surprisingly, all ignore this fundamental they assume decision making directly triggers actions. Thus, we propose novel hypothesis where mechanisms behaviour rely acquisition suitable representations percepts their top-down internal manipulation. Moreover, neuro-inspired model operationalise hypothesis. The capacity support was validated by systematically reproducing interpreting exhibited young old healthy adults, frontal Parkinson patients. results corroborate further articulate manipulation is core process cognition.

Flexible Representations of Dynamics Are Used in Object Manipulation

To manipulate an object skillfully, the brain must learn its dynamics, specifying the mapping between applied force and motion. A fundamental issue in sensorimotor control is whether such dynamics are represented in an extrinsic frame of reference tied to the object or an intrinsic frame of reference linked to the arm. Although previous studies have suggested that objects are represented in arm...

A computational theory of human perceptual mapping

This paper presents a new computational theory of how humans integrate successive views to form a perceptual map. Traditionally, this problem has been thought of as a straightforward integration problem whereby position of objects in one view is transformed to the next and combined. However, this step creates a paradoxical situation in human perceptual mapping. On the one hand, the method requi...

Foundations for Reasoning in Cognition-Based Computational Representations of Human Decision Making

In exploring the question of how humans reason in ambiguous situations or in the absence of complete information, we stumbled onto a body of knowledge that addresses issues beyond the original scope of our effort. We have begun to understand the importance that philosophy, in particular the work of C. S. Peirce, plays in developing models of human cognition and of information theory in general....

Symbolic and Sub-symbolic Representations in Computational Models of Human Cognition

The debate over symbolic versus sub-symbolic representations of human cognition has been continuing for thirty years, with little indication of a resolution. The argument is this: Does the human cognitive system use symbols as a representation of knowledge, and does it process symbols and their respective constituents? Or does the human cognitive system use a distributed representation of knowl...

CaMeRa: A Computational Model of Multiple Representations

This research aims to clarify, by constructing and testing o computer simulation, the use of multiple representations in problem solving, focusing on their role in visual reasoning. The model is motivated by extensive experimental evidence in the literature for the features it incorporates, but this article focuses on the system’s structure. We illustrate the model’s behavior by simulating the ...
